The Sport and Physical Activity FRG welcome Dr Jayne Caudwell, Principal Lecturer, University of Brighton, UK to present at this seminar. She teaches socio-cultural approaches to sport and leisure and engages with qualitative research methodologies, gender theory and theories of sexuality. Jayne has written on sports such as football, boxing and rowing and she is editor of Sport, Sexualities and Queer/Theory (2006),Women’s Football in the UK: Continuing with Gender Analyses (2012), and co-editor ofSexualities, Spaces and Leisure Studies (2012).
"Since its inception in 2008, The Justin Campaign has successfully worked with local (schools, youth clubs, prisons), national (city Prides, colleges and universities) and international groups (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender groups and football clubs) to promote inclusion and equality; specifically, to raise awareness of LGBT issues within football cultures and football communities. As participant volunteer Director of Education for the Campaign, I have organised and delivered activities, events and projects for and with young people.
In this seminar, I focus on two specific projects/events: 'Tackle Homophobia' young men's football team and their participation at CupDenmark 2012 (July 26th-29th) and the 'Justin Student Football Festival' at the University of Brighton (May 2nd, 2012). Despite both events receiving glowing reports and positive feedback, in this presentation I take a reflexive-turn to explore the extent to which young people’s non-normative sexualities are evident in these football contexts."
